Piston rings — removal (Peugeot 305)

1. Carefully remove the piston rings through the piston crown, being careful not to scratch the aluminum alloy. Do not try to remove the rings through the piston skirt, as they are iron and break easily. To make it easier to remove the rings and to prevent them from falling into empty grooves, you can place thin steel plates or feeler gauges under the rings.

2. To insert the feeler gauge, lift one end of the ring being removed from the groove and insert the feeler gauge under it.

3. Slowly move the feeler gauge around the piston, while lifting it slightly so that the ring comes out of its groove. When the ring is positioned on the flat surface of the piston next to the groove, remove it through the bottom.
