- Remove the cuff from the steering rod and from the side of the toothed rack housing. To do this, squeeze the ends of the fastening strips so that they can be lifted over the edge.
- Move the steering cuff along the steering rod outward.
- Thoroughly clean the connection area between the steering rod and the toothed rack to access the locking element.
- Knock out the locking strip with a chisel or a powerful screwdriver. The steering rod is mounted on the toothed rack with its own internal ball joint. To loosen the ball joint, service stations use a special tool, but you can also try to do this with a pipe wrench. The round ball joint housing fits quite tightly and the risk of damage is very low.
- Loosen the tie rod once it is released.
- Remove the lock washer and spacer washer. The locking must be replaced.
- To remove the steering tip, loosen the lock nut on the outside and unscrew the tip. In this case, first measure the length of the removed steering rod in order to set the new part to the same length. When unscrewing, count the number of turns of the steering tip.
- Screw on the new steering tip the same number of turns.
- Screw the new steering rod with the spacer washer and locking washer to the toothed rack and tighten the ball joint housing as much as possible with a pipe wrench.
- After this, lock the ball joint housing onto the toothed rack. Hammer in the bar located on the ball joint housing.
- Lubricate the toothed rack with steering gear grease and install the cuff.
- Secure the steering rod to the steering arm. To do this, install a new self-locking nut. The tightening torque of the nut is 35 Nm.
- The length of the steering rod at the location shown in Figure 209 must correspond to the original size.
