The engine can develop its full power only when the turbocharger is operating normally. If something is wrong with the engine, you can tell by the engine's smoke signals. In many cases, you can fix the malfunction yourself, without immediately visiting a service station. The following troubleshooting instructions must be followed in the given order. It should be noted that the recommendations provided are based on the author's experience with diesel and turbodiesel engines and may not necessarily coincide with Peugeot directives. These instructions also apply to conventional diesel engines.

Blue smoke at idle and when releasing the gas pedal during engine braking:

Check the engine oil level, check the idle speed adjustment and residual volume adjustment, check the fuel return line to the fuel tank, check the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, check the fuel supply line, check the valve clearances, check the injectors, check the compression in the cylinders, send the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection. Fix the problem.

Black smoke under load: Check the air intake system, check the fuel supply channel, check the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, check the valve clearances, check the injectors, check the compression in the cylinders, send the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection.

The engine does not start and emits black smoke: Check that the starter speed is at least 150 rpm, check the air intake system, check the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, check the valve clearances, check the injectors, and take the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection.

The engine does not start and emits light smoke: Check the preheating system, the cylinder head gasket may be broken, check the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, take the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection.

Blue smoke when starting a hot engine: Check the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, check the fuel injection regulation under load, check the oil consumption (increased oil consumption can damage the turbocharger), take the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection.

Smoking when starting a cold engine: Check the operation of the idle speed increase device, the injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, check the valve clearances, check the injectors, check the compression in the cylinders, send the high-pressure fuel pump to a service station for inspection.
