For beginners who own a turbocharged car for the first time:
Basically, the turbocharging system consists of three parts, namely the turbocharger, the relief valve and the charge air cooler.
A turbocharger is an add-on unit that increases the amount of air supplied to the engine. Since the air-fuel ratio is maintained at a constant engine displacement, engine power increases. The turbocharger consists of two chambers. One of the chambers is part of the exhaust system, the other chamber is connected to the air intake system. Two turbines, one in each chamber, sit on a common shaft. The exhaust gases spin the turbine, which causes an increase in the supplied air. To limit the turbocharger pressure, a relief valve is installed, that is, when a certain pressure is reached, the valve opens and excess pressure is released back into the exhaust system, without reaching the turbine. The charge air cooler lowers the temperature of the air leaving the turbocharger.
Very high turbocharger operating speeds and temperatures require good lubrication. Lubricant is supplied under pressure from the engine lubrication system. This is also the reason why the engine must be allowed to idle before turning it off. If this is not taken into account, it may happen that due to lack of lubrication the turbocharger will seize up and be destroyed.
Otherwise, the turbocharged engine operates in the same way as a conventional diesel engine.
