If the belt or tensioner is faulty, the belt may slip on the pulleys, resulting in loss of power and other problems.
The main symptoms of a belt failure can be the following signs:
- battery discharge;
- the warning lamp from the discharge of the battery lights up when the ignition is turned on;
- noise from alternator and belt drive.
Checking the accessory drive belt and tensioner
Make sure the accessory drive belt is in the groove and runs in line with the pulleys.
Check the belt for wear. If the belt has obvious signs of damage (wear, chipping, etc.), replace it.
If the belt tensioner (bearing) defective, replace the tensioner.
Check accessory drive belt tension. The belt tensioner must adjust the tension so that the belt does not slip on the alternator pulley.
Checking the drive belt on the marks of the dynamic tensioner
Dynamic Tensioner:
a - caliber hole;
b - mark of maximum elongation;
c - zero stretch mark;
d - belt tension control mark (fixed on the engine).
The dynamic tensioner's marking pattern allows you to control the elongation of the accessory drive belt.
Perform a visual inspection of the drive belt extension on the dynamic tensioner. Label match «b» And «d» indicates the need to replace the belt.
Attention. Before removal, mark the direction of rotation of the drive belt of the units.
Remove the accessory drive belt (see section «Engine and control systems»).
Check for hard points, noises or traces of oil on the dynamic tensioner as well as on the pulleys of the units.
Install the accessory drive belt (see section «Engine and control systems»).
Crank the engine four turns and check the extension of the accessory drive belt. The belt must be correctly installed on the dynamic tensioner and in the pulley grooves.
