This repair manual covers new Peugeot 306 vehicles manufactured since 1993. The new car was introduced as a compact five-door lower-midsize limousine, going on sale in early January with 1.4-, 1.6-, and 1.8-liter gasoline engines. By the summer of 1993, the engine and model range had expanded. A 1.9-liter diesel engine with and without a turbocharger, as well as a 2.0-liter engine with 8 or 16 valves, were available. Three-door models arrived later. The engine power figures quoted may vary slightly depending on the country of destination:

- 306 XR 1.41. Engine with a displacement of 1360 cm³ and a power of 55 kW (76 hp) at 5800 rpm (engine designation TU3 MS). The engine is equipped with a Motronic MA 3.0 fuel injection system from Bosch.
- 306 XR 1.61. Engine with a displacement of 1587 cm³ and a power of 66 kW (90 hp) at 5600 rpm (engine designation TU5 JP). The engine is equipped with a Bosch MP 5.1 fuel injection system.
- 306 XR 1.61. Engine with a displacement of 1587 cm³ and a power of 66 kW (90 hp) at 5600 rpm (engine designation TU5 JP). The engine is equipped with a Bosch MP 5.1 fuel injection system.
- 306 XR 1.81. Engine with a displacement of 1761 cm³ and a power of 76 kW (103 hp) at 6000 rpm (engine designation XU7 JP). The engine is equipped with the same fuel injection system as the 1.6-liter engines.

- The above mentioned models continued to be produced. Various special variants have been added to them (e.g. 306 XT Suisse).
- 306 XRD. Diesel engine without turbocharger. Engine capacity is 1905 cm³, power is 51 kW (69 hp) at 4600 rpm (engine designation XUD 9A),
- 306 XTDT. Turbocharged engine. Same displacement as the non-turbocharged engine, but produces 68 kW (92 hp) at 4000 rpm (engine designation XUD 9TE).
- 306 XSi. Three or five-door model with a 1998 cc engine with 8 valves. The engine produces 90 kW (123 hp) at 5,750 rpm and is equipped with a Magnetti Marelli fuel injection system, version 08.
- 305S16. Three- or five-door model with a 1998 cc engine with 16 valves and a power of 114 kW (155 hp) at 6500 rpm (engine designation XU10 34).
- 30 Cabriolett 1.8 and 2.01. The above mentioned engines have a working volume of 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters with 8 valves. The engines develop the same power accordingly.
All the named engines are divided into three groups. Both small engines belong to the "TU" engine group. Engines with a displacement of 1.8 and 2.0 liters belong to the "XU" engine group, and diesel engines belong to the "XUD" group. Diesel engines are described in separate sections. Since in most cases gasoline engines are described below separately by type, you should familiarize yourself with the relevant subsections before carrying out work.
The engine and gearbox are installed transversely in the engine compartment. Standard engines have an overhead camshaft and a toothed belt drive. The 16-valve engine has two camshafts. Cylinder heads and cylinder blocks also differ. The TU3 engine has a cylinder head and cylinder block made of light metal alloys, while other engine types have a cast iron cylinder block. On all engines, the crankshaft is mounted on 5 bearings.
Engine torque is transmitted to the front wheels via a diaphragm spring clutch, a five-speed gearbox, a helical gear axle and double-joint drive shafts with homokinetic universal joints. Since the summer of 1993, cars with four-speed gearboxes have also been supplied.
The chassis consists of a self-supporting body with a front auxiliary frame. The front wheel suspension consists of shock absorber struts with coil springs and coaxial shock absorbers, with triangular wishbones. The rear wheel suspension is separate with longitudinal arms, transverse torsion bars and telescopic shock absorbers.
Different models are equipped with different braking systems. On all models, the braking system consists of two brake circuits. All models have front disc brakes. Depending on the engine power, blown brake discs may be installed. The rear wheels are equipped with either self-adjusting drum brakes, or the vehicle is equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels. All vehicles with 2.0-liter engines equipped with ABS are equipped with this system. All vehicles are equipped with a power brake booster.
The vehicles are equipped with a rack and pinion steering system. Available on special order even for vehicles with low-power engines (with a working volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters) and diesel engines can be equipped with power steering. On other models, power steering is installed as standard.
