General description of the cooling system (Peugeot 305)

The cooling system is sealed and has a front-mounted radiator and a timing belt driven water pump. The thermostat is located on the cylinder head on the flywheel side and ensures faster engine warm-up by initially restricting the circulation of fluid in the engine and heater circuits. After the engine warms up, the thermostat opens and the coolant begins to flow through the radiator, where it is cooled. Primary control of engine temperature is provided by one or two electric fans located either in front of or behind the radiator (depending on the model). The fans are switched on by a double-action thermal switch located on the radiator.

To account for changes in the volume of coolant with temperature, an expansion tank is included in the system, the plug of which is equipped with a special pressure relief valve.

The radiator is a cross-flow type and has plastic or metal side tanks. At the outlet of the system from the cylinder head there is a switch for the high coolant temperature warning light.

Cooling system for turbocharged models - general description

1. The cooling system on turbo models is basically the same as on non-turbo models, but an oil cooler is added to it (similar to that used on XUD9 engines). The thermostat housing has been modified accordingly.
