Brake system — general description (Peugeot 306)

All vehicles are equipped with front disc brakes. However, the similarity between the various braking systems ends here, as even front disc brakes are installed with either solid brake discs (models with a 1.4-liter engine), or with blown brake discs (all other models). The brake systems fitted to the Peugeot 306 can be either Bendix or ATE Tevis and this section describes both brake designs. Brake calipers have only one piston. These designs use so-called floating calipers, which means that the brake fluid pressure is applied to one piston, which moves the entire caliper along sliding wedges (Bendix) or sliding fingers (ATE), pressing both brake pads against the brake disc.

The main differences between the various models are in the rear wheel brakes. On vehicles not equipped with an ABS system, except for vehicles with 2.0-liter engines, drum brakes are installed on the rear wheels. Drum brakes from either Bendix or ATE Tevis can be installed, but disc brakes are only available from Bendix. Both drum brake designs operate on the same operating principle. The difference between them lies in the mechanism for installing the brake pads.

The ABS system installed in vehicles can be either a Bendix or a Bosch 2E system. In addition to the manufacturer, these systems also differ in the type of wheel braking release.

With the Bendix system installed, the braking system consists of disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. This type of braking system is installed on vehicles with TU type engines and diesel engines.



When installing a Bosch system, either disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels can be installed (with a turbodiesel engine), or disc brakes are installed on both the front and rear wheels (with engines with a displacement of 1.8 liters and with both engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters).

A hydraulic brake booster and a brake force regulator that reacts to the vehicle load are also installed.
