When performing the following work, the timing belt should be removed only partially, that is, only from the camshaft toothed pulley:
- Removal and installation the cylinder head
- Removal and installation the camshaft and adjusting valve clearances.
When performing the following work, the toothed belt must be removed completely:
- Removal and installation the oil pump drive. Removing and installing the water pump.
- Depending on whether the timing belt is removed partially or completely, different work is performed.
- To replace the timing belt, it is necessary to raise the right front side of the car.
- Loosen the nuts on the right front wheel, raise the right front side of the car and place a jack stand under the body on that side. Remove the wheel.
- Unscrew the shield in the wheel arch.
- On a turbodiesel engine, remove the large air hose, the vibration damper mass, and the hand pump. The location of these parts is shown in Figure 390.

- Loosen and remove the drive belt of the units.
- Using Figure 379, remove the belt guards. In this case, first push the upper casing forward and then pull it upward. Pay attention to the inserted spacer sleeve (4).
- Engage fifth gear and turn the engine by the wheel hub until the piston of the first cylinder is in the top dead center position of the compression stroke. In this position, insert the locking rod into the flywheel.
- Prepare two M8 x 40 bolts. Insert one of the bolts into the camshaft sprocket at location (1) in Figure 391, and insert the other bolt into the high-pressure fuel pump drive pulley at location (2). This will lock the valve timing mechanism.
- Loosen the bolt (2) and nut (1) of the timing belt tension roller. Insert an extension with a 9.52 mm square into the square hole (6) in Figure 338, (and ratchet), as shown in Figure 339 to compress the springs of the automatic belt tensioner. This is a four-sided adapter from a set of key heads with a 3/8-inch drive. Re-tighten the bolt (2) in Figure 392 to hold the tensioner in the new position.
- Remove the flywheel housing and hold the flywheel from turning accordingly or lock the crankshaft by engaging fifth gear.
- Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt and remove the pulley. To do this, support it with two crowbars or use a puller.

- Place a rope or chain behind the lifting bracket (3) in Fig. 391 and suspend the engine from a hoist or similar lifting device. It is also recommended to place a jack under the engine and lift the engine from the suspension.
- Remove the engine mount (4) in Fig. 391.
- Remove the timing belt. First, the belt is removed from the camshaft toothed pulley.
- Now, if necessary, the timing drive components can be replaced.
Installation of the timing mechanism parts is carried out as follows:
- Check that there are no traces of oil or grease on all parts that come into contact with the timing belt.
- Three locking bolts and rods need to be inserted. Or you can turn the camshaft to a position where you can insert one of the M8 bolts at location (1) in Figure 391. This will put the timing pulley in the correct position for installing the timing belt.
- Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt (2) (Figure 392).
- Check whether the timing belt tension roller is fully pressed outward, that is, that it is tightened in this position. Both timing belt tension rollers must rotate freely, i.e. not jam.
- Lock the high pressure fuel pump drive pulley by inserting two M8 bolts (2) in Figure 391. This sets the drive pulley to the fuel injection position of the first cylinder.
- Lock the crankshaft at top dead center by inserting the locking rod into the flywheel from the rear side as shown in Fig. 359.
- Apply the timing belt. First, place the belt on the crankshaft toothed pulley, then on the rigidly fixed guide roller (5) in Figure 377, the high-pressure fuel pump drive pulley (6) and the camshaft toothed pulley (2). Keeping the toothed belt tensioned, place it on the other side on the water pump pulley (8) and on the tension roller (9).
- Check the engagement of the belt with all toothed pulleys.
- Screw in and temporarily tighten the bolt with washer onto the end of the crankshaft.
- To release the tension roller, loosen the bolt (1) and nut (2) in Figure 392.
- Remove all locking pins.
- To align the position of the timing belt, turn the crankshaft at least two revolutions - but in no case against the direction of engine rotation.
- Loosen the bolt and nut again in Figure 392. This will move the tensioner into the belt tension position. In this position, tighten the bolt (1) and nut (2) to a torque of 18 Nm.
- Turn the engine over several times and reinsert the timing locking rod. If the bolt is difficult to insert, then turn the engine again, since the position does not correspond to the specified one.
- Remove the bolt and washer from the crankshaft again.
- Install both timing belt guards.
- Put on the crankshaft pulley and screw the bolt with the washer into the crankshaft. Pre-coat the bolt threads with Loctite paste.
- While supporting the crankshaft, tighten the belt pulley bolt to a torque of 40 Nm. From this position, tighten the bolt an additional 60°.
- All other work is carried out in reverse order. Tighten the engine mount to 45 Nm. Don't forget to install the clutch cover.
