Note. Before starting work, read the warning given in paragraph 1.
Removing
1. Drain as much fuel as possible before removing the tank. Since there is no drain plug, it is preferable to remove the tank when it is nearly empty. Before emptying the tank, disconnect the ground wire from the battery (see «Disconnecting the battery») and drain the remaining fuel from the tank in a suitable manner.
2. Place wheel chocks under the front wheels. Raise the rear of the vehicle and securely jack stands under it (see «Lifting and placing the car on supports»).
3. Remove the exhaust system heat shield from the fuel tank base as described in paragraph 16.
4. Working on the right side of the fuel tank, release the clamps and then disconnect the filler vent line and main filler hose from the fuel tank. Also disconnect the breather hose and vent hose from their fittings on the right side of the tank.
5. Disconnect the accessible supply and return (if applicable) fuel hoses on the quick fittings on the fuel filter and directly on the hoses. When disconnecting the fuel lines, take note of the information given in paragraph 7 about the pressure relief in the fuel system. Plug the ends of the lines to minimize fuel leakage and prevent dirt from entering.
6. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector next to the fuel filter.
7. Release the two parking brake cables from their respective guides on the underside of the fuel tank.
8. Install a rolling jack under the tank, placing a block of wood under the bottom of the tank. Then raise the jack just enough to bear the weight of the tank.
9. Turn out two bolts and remove a basic coupler from the bottom party of a tank.
10. Remove two additional bolts, one on each side of the tank.
11. Slowly lower the tank from its normal position until there is sufficient clearance to disconnect the rest of the fuel and ventilation pipes from the tank.
12. Place the right parking brake cable on the upper plane of the tank, slightly lower the jack and remove the tank from under the right side of the car.
13. If there is sediment or water in the tank, remove the fuel pump (see paragraph 8) and flush the tank with clean fuel. The tank is made of synthetic material and should be replaced if damaged. However, in some cases, a specialist can repair small leaks or minor damage. Before attempting to repair the fuel tank, consult with an appropriate specialist.
Installation
14. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:
- A) When lifting the tank to its normal position, make sure that the hoses are not pinched between the tank and the car body.
- b) Lay and secure pipes and hoses correctly. Fix them securely with appropriate clamps.
- V) Finally, fill the tank with a small amount of fuel and carefully check it for signs of leakage before driving on the road.
