1. Check the engine and transmission oil levels, coolant and fuel levels, and make sure the battery is well charged.

2. On early models with a Roto-Diesel fuel filter, unscrew the pump plunger.

3. Turn on the ignition to energize the shut-off solenoid and operate the pump on the fuel filter until resistance is felt. If necessary, tighten the pump plunger.

4. Press the gas pedal all the way down, turn the ignition key to position "M" and wait until the glow plug indicator light goes out.

5. Start the engine. It may take a little longer the first time, as the fuel system needs to be primed to get the engine started.

6. After the engine starts, let it run at fast idle speed. Check that the low oil pressure warning light goes out and inspect the engine for oil, fuel and coolant leaks.

Models before September 1986.

7. If everything is OK, let the engine run for 10 minutes at 3000 rpm and then turn off the ignition and let the engine cool for at least 3.5 hours.

8. Remove the cap from the expansion tank of the cooling system to relieve residual pressure, and then reinstall the cap.

9. Loosen the cylinder head bolts alternately in the correct sequence by 90° and then tighten them again in the correct sequence to the final torque specified in Specifications.

All models

10. If you have replaced many parts with new ones, the engine should be treated as new and operated at reduced speeds and loads for the first 1000 km. After the initial mileage, it is recommended to change the engine oil and oil filter.

11. The synchronization of the fuel injection pump operation and its operation in idle mode must be checked and adjusted as specified in chapter 3.
