Replacing the shock absorber strut (Peugeot 307)

To remove the shock absorber strut:
  • loosen the front wheel mounting bolts, then raise the front of the car and secure it on stands;
  • remove the front wheel;

  • unscrew the fastening nut 1 (figure 6.2) and disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the shock absorber strut;
  • mark the position of the bolts securing the lower part of the shock absorber to the steering knuckle;
  • holding the bolts from turning with one wrench, use the second wrench to unscrew the nuts 2. To prevent the steering knuckle from lowering, secure it to the subframe with soft wire;
  • remove the bolts securing the lower part of the shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle;
  • unscrew nut 3 securing the ball joint journal of the steering rod end to the steering knuckle, being careful not to damage the protective cover of the constant velocity joint of the drive shaft;
  • using a puller, remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle;
  • remove the windshield wiper arms;

  • remove panel 1 (figure 6.3) opening in front of the windshield;

  • using a TORX 45 key, secure the shock absorber rod from turning and, using another open-end wrench, unscrew nut 1 (figure 6.4) fastening the shock absorber rod to the body;
  • tilt the top of the steering knuckle to the side;
  • carefully remove the shock absorber strut from under the front fender. Be careful not to damage the protective boot of the constant velocity joint of the drive shaft.

Install the shock absorber strut in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

  • when installing, it is necessary to use new self-locking nuts;
  • using a TORX 45 key, secure the shock absorber rod from turning and, using another open-end wrench, screw in and tighten nut 1 to a torque of 69 N·m (see figure 6.4) fastening the shock absorber rod to the body;
  • in accordance with the previously applied marks, insert the bolts securing the shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle and tighten the nuts 2 (see Figure 6.2), tightening them to a torque of 90 Nm;
  • tighten the ball joint pin mounting nuts 3 (see Figure 6.2) torque of 50 Nm, and the stabilizer link mounting nut with a torque of 36 Nm;
  • install the wheel and secure it with bolts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to 90 Nm.
