Cooling system leaks are usually detected by a white or rust-colored coating in the area of the leak.
Carefully inspect the radiator and coolant hoses along their entire length. Replace hoses with cracks, breaks or signs of aging. Cracks are easier to detect if you pinch the hose. Pay special attention to the clamps securing the hoses to the cooling system components. Overtightened clamps can cause the hose to rupture or puncture, resulting in leaks in the cooling system. Inspect all hoses and their connection points. If leaks are found, replace them or the gasket.
Pinpointing the exact location of a fuel leak can be difficult until the leak has become larger and therefore noticeable. Fuel begins to evaporate quickly as soon as it comes into contact with air, especially in a hot engine compartment. Small drops may disappear before you locate the leak. If you suspect the fuel leak is in the engine compartment, let the engine cool and then start it with the hood open. Since metal parts contract when cold and rubber hoses loosen during this time, any leaks will become more noticeable at this time.
If you notice signs of a fluid leak but cannot determine the type or exact location of the leak, place a large piece of paper or rag underneath your vehicle when storing it. This will help you locate the leak and identify the leaking fluid by color. But keep in mind that some leaks may only appear when the engine is running.
When the vacuum hose is not sealed, air is sucked into the hose (but it doesn't come out of the hose), which makes it difficult to detect the leak. To locate a leak, you can use an old vacuum hose as a stethoscope. Place one end of the hose to your ear (do not insert into the ear), the other one - to the site of the suspected leak. At the location of the leak, a hissing sound will be clearly audible through the hose. Since the test is performed while the engine is running, avoid contact with hot and moving parts.
