4. At specified intervals or at the first signs of poor transmission operation, the transmission fluid level should be checked using a dipstick. The box must be hot (after at least a half-hour drive). With the engine running, set the gear selector lever to position "P" and check the transmission fluid level in the gearbox. If necessary, add fluid through the dipstick tube using a clean funnel and a clean flexible tube (see B/Figure 12.69). When working with an automatic transmission, absolute cleanliness is of great importance.

Caution: Transmission fluid may be very hot.


After draining the fluid, replace the drain plugs and fill the gearbox with the required amount of fresh transmission fluid.

Precautionary measures



7. If it is necessary to tow a vehicle with an automatic transmission, the towing speed must not exceed 30 mph, and the towing distance must not exceed 30 miles. If these conditions cannot be met, the vehicle must be towed using a semi-truck.
