Viscosity and specifications
At the factory, the engine is filled with special high-quality multigrade oil, which is suitable for operation at any time of the year, with the exception of extremely cold climatic zones.
Pic. 2.5. The use of engine oils depending on their viscosity and temperature
The viscosity grade of the oil should be selected according to the optimum oil viscosity depending on the range of prevailing ambient temperatures shown in fig. 2.5. If the air temperature is only briefly outside the temperature range shown in the figure, the oil should not be changed.
It is also possible to use synthetic oils of the highest quality. If semi-synthetic or synthetic oils are not available, API SH/SJ oils for gasoline engines or CD/CF oils for diesel engines can be used, as long as the maintenance plan is followed «For especially difficult conditions», which provides for reduced periods between oil changes.
Attention! Seasonal oils, due to their specific viscosity-temperature properties, usually cannot be used all year round, so they should only be used in the appropriate climatic zones.
When using multigrade oils 5W30, it is necessary to avoid prolonged operation of the engine at a high speed and a constant high load on the engine.
In all cases, the selected engine oil must meet the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer.
Additives for motor oils
Additives that reduce friction losses should not be added to engine oil.
To avoid engine damage or failure of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, do not use any engine oil additives.
Blending oils
This and similar questions are of interest to many motorists. Unfortunately, the oil cannot be mixed, even if these are oils from firms «with a worldwide reputation» (Shell, Mobil, British Petroleum). Each company produces commercial oils, adding to the oil base a whole range of additives, the chemical composition of which is kept secret. Therefore, when mixing high-quality oils of the same purpose, made in accordance with the requirements of existing engine oil classification systems, but using technologies from different companies, low-quality oils can be obtained due to the incompatibility of additives. Oils from different companies are interchangeable, the possibility of using such oils is often indicated by engine builders. But that doesn't mean they can be mixed. API and ACEA classification systems require mandatory identical test methods (laboratory, bench - motor, etc.) oils from different companies. If desired (or need) automakers may introduce additional tests (or more stringent conditions) oils.
The same applies to mixing mineral or synthetic oils (sometimes even the same company). Synthetic oils, such as hydrocarbon oils, from the same company can be mixed. In this case, the oil manufacturer gives appropriate recommendations and bears responsibility. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for oils to deteriorate when mixed.
In no case should imported and domestic oils be mixed, especially with the addition of domestic additives.
Checking the engine oil level
Pic. 2.6. Level indicator (probe) engine oil: A - maximum level; B - minimum level
Check the engine oil level regularly. If necessary, between changes, top up the engine oil to the normal level (the maximum oil consumption per 1000 km can be up to 0.5 liters.). The oil level must be checked with a cold engine, when the vehicle is on level ground, using the level gauge in the instrument cluster or the oil level gauge (probe) on the engine (pic. 2.6). There are two marks on the dipstick: A - maximum level; B is the minimum level. The oil level must never exceed the upper mark A on the dipstick (dipstick).
Changing the oil and oil filter
Periodic oil and oil filter changes are the most important preventive maintenance procedure. During operation, engine oil ages - it becomes liquid and contaminated, which leads to premature engine wear.
An oil change should be carried out immediately after a trip on a still warm engine, so that the oil drains better along with contaminants.
The engine oil is changed in accordance with the maintenance schedule developed by Peugeot.
Replace the oil filter or oil filter element in accordance with the maintenance schedule.
Attention! Avoid prolonged contact of used oil with exposed areas of the body.
