The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft, which also drives the coolant pump. On the 1.9L engine, the camshaft controls the valves via tappets. Valve clearances are adjusted by replacing the linings between the tappets and the camshaft cams. On the 2.0L engine, the camshaft controls the valves via rocker arms, which rest against hydraulic stops. These stops automatically maintain the required clearances.
