Liner Seal Modifications (XL/XR Series Engines) (Peugeot 305)

1. In 1984, steel seals began to be used instead of paper ones at the base of the cartridge cases. Changes were also made to the liner design (see liner seal markings. v Specifications).

2. New liners and seals can be installed as a set on older engines, however new seals cannot be used with old liners (and vice versa). For new seals, the following cylinder head bolt tightening sequence must be followed.

3. Check that the cylinder head bolts are of category 10.9 and then tighten them in the sequence shown in the figure 1.19, until the moment specified in Specifications for stage 1.

4. Tighten the bolts in the same sequence to the torque specified in Specifications for stage 2.

5. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature, then turn it off and tighten each bolt by 35°. After this, the valve clearances should be adjusted.

6. There is no need to further tighten the cylinder head bolts after the first 1000 miles.
