XU Series Engine — general description (Peugeot 305)

1. The XU series engine found in the GT, GTX and later GR and SR models is similar to the XL and XR engines in that it also has 4 wet cylinders, a 5-bearing crankshaft and an overhead camshaft.

2. The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt, which is tensioned by a spring-loaded wheel and also drives the water pump. The camshaft acts directly on the tappets. Valve clearances are adjusted using washers located between the valve lifters and stems.

3. The oil pump is located in the sump and is chain driven from the crankshaft.

4. The engine and gearbox are installed in line and not combined, which makes it easier to access many components.
