  • Thoroughly clean the areas where the drive shafts exit the gearbox, lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seals and press the oil seals into the gearbox flush with the outer surface of the gearbox.
  • Insert one of the protective guide bushings supplied with the new seals into the hole in the differential as shown in Figure 201. Insert the inner end of the drive shaft into the gearbox, engaging the splined portion of the shaft with the side gear. After perfect engagement, remove the protective guide sleeve by pulling it out by the "ears".
  • Perform the same work on the other side of the vehicle if both drive shafts were removed.
  • Engage the drive shaft with the steering knuckle by pulling it outward as far as possible.
  • Place the ball joint protective washer.
  • Move the steering knuckle inward and connect the lower part of the shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle as shown in Figure 200. Press the steering knuckle up as far as it will go and insert the pinch bolt into the steering knuckle. Check the position of the protective washer and tighten the bolt to a torque of 30 Nm.

  • Oil seals are not always supplied with protective bushings. In this case, it is necessary to press the seal correctly.
  • Tighten both shaft support nuts on the right side to a torque of 18 Nm.
  • If you have an ABS system, install a wheel speed sensor.
  • Screw the new drive shaft nut onto the shaft without tightening it completely.
  • Lower the car and apply the handbrake. Then use the appropriate wrench head and torque wrench to tighten the drive shaft nuts on both sides to a torque of 265 nm if the thread has a diameter of 20 mm (M20), or to a torque of 320 nm if the thread has a diameter of 24 mm (M24). If it is difficult to immediately determine the thread diameter, then measure it with a thread meter to avoid erroneous tightening of the nuts. Determining such a high tightening torque requires a powerful torque wrench.
  • After tightening, lock the nuts so that the hole in the drive shaft aligns with the slot in the castle nut. If this does not happen, tighten the nut a little. Insert a new cotter pin and bend its ends.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts to 85 Nm.
  • Fill the gearbox with oil. The amount of oil is determined by the engine displacement (see section 8.4), adjust the oil level if necessary.
