- put the car on a lift and remove the front wheels;
- on the gear side of the distribution valve, loosen the toe adjustment nut;
Pic. 7.21. Using a Puller (1) to extract the ball joint (2) tie rod end from steering knuckle
- unscrew nut 2 (see fig. 7.21) fastening the pin of the ball joint of the tie rod end to the steering knuckle, while being careful not to damage the protective cover of the constant velocity joint of the drive shaft;
- using puller 1, remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle;
Pic. 7.22. Ventilation tube connection point (1) to protective cover (2)
- disconnect the ventilation tube 1 from the protective cover 2 (see fig. 7.22);
Pic. 7.27. Mounting the protective cover of the steering rod: 1 - clamp; 2 - ventilation tube; 3 - protective cover; And - a basic surface of a protective cover on the steering mechanism; B - bearing surface of the protective cover on the steering rod
- remove clamp 1 (see fig. 7.27) attaching a protective cover to the steering rod;
Pic. 7.24. Clamp Location (1) fixing the protective cover to the steering gear
- remove clamp 1 (see fig. 7.24) fastening the protective cover to the steering mechanism;
Pic. 7.25. Removing the protective cover (1) tie rod
- shifting along the steering rod, remove the protective cover 1 (see fig. 7.25). Apply a light coat of TOTAL N3924/N3945 grease to the tie rod to ease the removal of the protective boot;
- turn the front wheels all the way to the left, then turn the steering wheel back about 1/8 turn;
Pic. 7.28. Special tool 0721-B (1), mounted on a gear rack
- install special tool 0721-B 1 (pic. 7.28) as close as possible to the edge of the rack and so that the pivot bearings rest on the mechanical elements (underframe, anti-roll bar, etc.). Device 1 protects the steering mechanism from damage during the removal of the steering rod;
- remove the tie rod end;
Pic. 7.29. Installing the key with roller 0721-A (1) instead of a tie rod end for removing the tie rod
- replace the tie rod end with a wrench with roller 0721-A 1 (pic. 7.29) and remove the tie rod.
Attention! On left-hand drive vehicles, special tool 0721-B must be installed on the rack teeth on the left side.
To install the tie rod:
- fix the steering rod on the gear rack;
- instead of the tie rod end, install the wrench with roller 0721-A and tighten the tie rod to 80 Nm;
- remove the key with roller 0721-A from the steering rod;
Pic. 7.26. Support surface (A) protective cover installed on the steering rod
- apply a thin layer of TOTAL N3924/ TOTAL N3945 grease to the surface of protective boot A (see fig. 7.26), mounted on the tie rod;
- dressing through the steering rod, install the protective cover on the steering mechanism. Align the bearing surfaces of the protective cover 3 on the steering gear A and steering rod B (see fig. 7.27);
- fasten with clamp 1 (see fig. 7.27) protective cover on the steering mechanism;
- connect ventilation tube 2 (see fig. 7.27) to the protective cover;
Pic. 7.23. Clamp Location (1) fixing the protective cover to the steering rod
- fasten the protective cover 1 with a clamp (see fig. 7.23) on the tie rod;
- further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal;
- adjust wheel alignment;
- Use the DIAG 2000 diagnostic tool to set the steering angle sensor.
