The automatic transmission (AT) thanks to a special combination of mechanical and hydraulic transmissions significantly increases efficiency when driving in 3rd and 4th gears, which allows for a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

An automatic transmission malfunction may occur both in the control electronics and in the gearbox itself. In this case, it is possible to move the selector lever to any position, but when engaging forward gears, the car will only move in 4th or 5th gear. Contact a service station immediately.

Downshift device (Kick-Down)

Kick-Down mode is used to engage a lower gear when the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way down. In this case, the point of increased resistance must be passed. This mode provides maximum acceleration of the car when switching to a lower gear.

When the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way down, the transmission shifts sequentially to a lower gear depending on the speed and engine speed.

Possible positions of the control lever

Figure 1.103. Selector lever, automatic transmission

The gear selector control lever can be in the following six positions: (figure 1.103):

  • "P" - parking position;
  • "R" — reverse gear;
  • "N" - neutral position;
  • "D" - automatic mode;
  • "3" - position for driving on rough terrain, in the city or on a winding road;
  • "2" - position for riding in mountainous terrain.

Figure 1.104. Selector lever position indication

Each of the above positions of the automatic transmission selector lever corresponds to a lit indicator on the instrument cluster display (figure 1.104).

The engine can only be started when the automatic transmission control lever is in position "P" or "N".

Caution! When the vehicle is left with the engine running, the control lever must be in the "P" or "N" position and the parking brake must be applied.

After moving the selector lever to the position corresponding to forward or reverse gear, wait for the moment the gear is engaged, feel a slight push and only then remove your foot from the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal.

Note: Before leaving the vehicle, place the automatic transmission selector lever in the "P" or "N" position and apply the parking brake.

If you mistakenly move the control lever to the "N" position while driving at high engine speeds, immediately release the "gas". Wait until the speed drops to the value corresponding to the idle mode, and only then engage the required gear.

The movement begins with the selection of the driving mode, when the selector lever is moved to one of the positions ("D", "R", "3" or "2"). Wait for the transmission mechanism to engage, then a slight jolt will follow, then release the parking brake lever, release the brake pedal and only then press the accelerator pedal - the car will immediately start moving.

When stopping the car for a short time, it is enough to stop the car by pressing the brake pedal; the engine must be running in idle mode.

To park the car on a level surface, simply set the control lever to the "P" position, thereby locking the transmission.

On a slope, apply the parking brake first and then lock the transmission - the transmission locking mechanism is under less stress and is released more easily.

The automatic transmission has three control programs:
  • "normal" ("economical" or adaptive);
  • "sporty";
  • "winter" (movement on snow).

Figure 1.105. Selecting the automatic transmission control program

The program selection is provided by pressing buttons A ("S") and B ("*"), located to the right of the automatic transmission selector lever (figure 1.105). When button A is pressed once, the "sport" program is selected and the control panel indicator lights up with the confirmation "S". When button B is pressed once, the "winter" program is selected and the control panel indicator lights up with the confirmation "*". When these buttons are pressed again, the control program switches to the "normal" (or "economical") position.

The "Normal" control program provides automatic gear shifting depending on the following parameters:
  • driving style;
  • road profile;
  • loading the car.

The automatic transmission control system continuously selects from the programs stored in its memory the one that most closely matches the current driving conditions.

The "Sport" control program automatically enables a sporty driving style and more intense acceleration.

The "Winter" control program is activated when the selector lever is set to the "D" position and automatically ensures smooth movement on snow and slippery roads. At the same time, the traction of the wheels with the road and controllability are improved. The car starts moving from the 2nd gear and shifting to lower gears occurs at low engine speeds.

Features of automatic transmission operation.

During prolonged braking, the automatic transmission automatically switches to a lower gear for more effective engine braking.

When the gas is released abruptly, there is no shifting to a higher gear.

When starting to move, while the engine is cold, the optimal engine warm-up program is activated to reduce the emission of toxic components of exhaust gases into the atmosphere.

Warnings!
  • 1. Any malfunctions in the automatic transmission control system are accompanied by flashing of the "sport control program" and "driving on snow" indicators. The malfunction is manifested by shock loads when switching from position "P" to position "R" and when switching from position "N" to position "R".
  • 2. When the indicators are flashing, the speed should not exceed 100 km/h.
  • 3. If a malfunction of the automatic transmission occurs, immediately contact a service station.
  • 4. If the engine speed is high at idle, the vehicle may start moving without pressing the accelerator pedal. Hold the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal.
  • 5. Do not touch the accelerator pedal while shifting the selector lever if the vehicle is stationary.
  • 6. When changing gears with the vehicle stationary, do not press the accelerator pedal. Hold the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal.
  • 7. When the brake pedal is pressed, do not press the accelerator pedal.
  • 8. When performing any work in the engine compartment with the engine running, set the selector lever to position "P" and apply the parking brake.
  • 9. Move the selector lever to the "N", "P" and "R" positions only when the vehicle is completely stopped.
  • 10. Do not leave children unattended in a vehicle with the engine running and the ignition keys in the ignition.
