12.1.1 Removing the brake drum and wheel hub

  • The wheel bearing in the brake drum or wheel hub on vehicles with rear disc brakes can be replaced separately. To remove the wheel hub flange and the inner bearing race from the axle butt on vehicles with rear disc brakes, a universal puller with two or three jaws is required. An oil seal is installed on the rear side of the brake drum,
  • Raise the rear of the car. The rear wheels should sag. Place wedges under the front wheels to prevent the car from moving off the stands.
  • Remove the wheel from the corresponding side.
  • Remove the hub cap as shown figure 229. Discard the cap immediately as it needs to be replaced.

With drum brakes

  • Using Figure 231, unscrew the hub nut. To prevent the wheel axle from turning, which sometimes happens, insert a 12 mm open-end wrench into the axle and hold the axle with the wrench. Remove the washer and hub together with the brake drum. If the drum is firmly stuck, you can insert a screwdriver in the place shown in Figure 231 and press it on the handbrake lever. When you press the lever, its mounting plate comes out. At the same time, the brake pads return to their center position.

With disc brakes

  • Unscrew the wheel axle nut and remove the washer located underneath it.
  • Use a puller to pull the wheel hub flange off the wheel axle, as shown in Figure 232. The inner bearing ring and spacer ring are located under the flange. If required, both of these parts can be removed using a puller.

12.1.2 Installing the wheel bearing and wheel hub

With drum brakes

If necessary, replace the wheel bearing.

The installation of the brake drum and wheel hub is carried out as follows:
  • Place a new oil seal on the axle butt with the sealing lips facing outward.
  • Lubricate the sealing lips and insert the working ring of the oil seal into the wheel hub. The named parts are shown in Figure 233.
  • Lubricate the wheel axle with a friction reducer (inquire at a Peugeot service station), however, the lubricant should not get on the brake pads.
  • Place the brake drum on the axle, place a washer on the outside and screw on a new nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 185 Nm.
  • Lock the nut by driving the lug on the nut into the groove in the axle.
  • Install a new hub cap and wheel.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts to 85 Nm.

With disc brakes

The hub and bearing cannot be replaced separately, meaning that if the bearing is damaged, a new hub with bearing must be installed. The toothed ring of the ABS system sensor is also included here.

If the working surface of the spacer ring is damaged, it should also be replaced. The spacer ring is inserted with the machined surface onto the hub mount. The spacer ring should be pressed in, not driven in. To do this, install a pipe of the appropriate diameter and press the ring in place, tightening it with the old hub nut. After this, remove the nut and pipe.

Place the inner bearing ring against the spacer ring and hammer it in with a piece of pipe, as shown in Figure 234. After this, place the wheel hub on the axle. Place a washer on the outside, lubricate the threads of the wheel axle and screw on the nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 185 Nm.

Finally, install a new hub cap and fit the brake disc.

12.1.3 Replacing the wheel bearing (only on vehicles with rear drum brakes)

The wheel bearing is pressed into the brake drum and held externally by a retaining ring. The bearing shell must be pressed out from the inside of the brake drum. For this you can use a powerful screwdriver.

The bearing must be pressed out under a press using a rod of the appropriate diameter. In this case, place the brake drum on the outer side. The new bearing is pressed in from the outside and secured with a retaining ring. Finally, press the bearing shell into the brake drum.
