Thermostat — installation (Peugeot 306)

On TU type engines, the thermostat is located in the fitting on the top side of the engine in the location shown in Figure 167. The installation of the thermostat on XU type engines is shown in figure 82. To remove it, it is necessary to drain the coolant (section 4.1.) and after loosening the clamp, disconnect the hose from the fitting. Remove the thermostat.

The thermostat cannot be repaired and must be replaced if damaged. A simple check is performed as follows:

• Hang the thermostat on a piece of wire in a vessel filled with cold water, as shown in Figure 168. Install the thermometer in a similar manner. The thermostat and thermometer should not touch the walls of the vessel.

• Gradually heat the water in the vessel and observe the thermostat opening as it heats up (79–82°C). At 105°C, the thermostat should be fully open.
• The thermostat pin should protrude at least 7.5 mm during this test. If the thermostat fails this test, it must be replaced.

When installing, the thermostat is installed with a new gasket. To ensure good sealing, a sealing compound is applied to the contact surfaces. Before securing the clamps, they should be checked. Replace if necessary. Fill the system with coolant (section 4.1.).



After installing a new thermostat, you should drive a short distance and check how the thermostat opens.
