2. Remove the strips holding the sleeves and check that the surface of the cylinder block is absolutely clean and has no scratches or burrs. Install a new cylinder head gasket to the block.
3. Once again check that the cylinder head is clean and free of scratches and burrs on the contact surface, and carefully lower the head onto the cylinder block, making sure that the gasket does not move. Turn the camshaft so that its drive end is in the position shown in B/fig. 1.18).
4. Inspect the rockers again to make sure everything is in order and coat the rocker thrust pads with Molykote 321 R or equivalent. Lower the rocker mechanism onto the cylinder head, making sure that the locating pins of the two end blocks of the bearings go into the holes intended for them in the head (see photo).
5. Apply oil to the threads of the 10 cylinder head bolts and under their heads. Install bolts with nuts, but without washers yet. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in B / fig. 1.19 until the moment specified in Specifications for stage 1 (see photo). After that, in the same sequence, tighten them to the torque indicated for step 1.
6. From June 1980, a modified camshaft and reinforced cylinder head bolts began to be installed on the engines in question. At the same time, the manufacturer introduced an increased tightening torque for the cylinder head bolts. It is strictly forbidden to tighten the cylinder head bolts on older models until this point, unless you have replaced the camshaft and bolts on the old model with new, modified ones. The camshafts are identified by a color mark next to the central neck, and the bolts are identified by the numbers on their heads:
old | New | |
Camshaft on XL5 engine (118) | green label | blue label |
Camshaft on XR5 engine (142) | white label | yellow label |
Cylinder head bolts (all engines) | 8.8 | 10.9 |
