44. Prepare to remove the box (see paragraphs 10-19 and 21-23).
45. Disconnect the dipstick tube from the pan by unscrewing its nut. Pick up the phone (its bracket is secured with one of the starter bolts).
46. Remove the lower shield of the torque converter. Remove the 3 bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate, turning the crankshaft to allow access to each bolt.
47. Disconnect the ball joint of the gear selection cable (see paragraph 22). Loosen the bolt securing the cable bracket and move the cable to the side so it doesn't get in the way.
48. Clamp the water hoses and disconnect them from the transmission fluid radiator (be prepared for some coolant to spill when doing this).
49. Remove the bolt securing the ground wire to the box. Disconnect the wires from the starter switch/reverse light switch.
50. Disconnect the gear downshift cable from the carburetor.
51. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the gearbox by removing its locking plug.
52. Remove the bolt securing the TDC sensor bracket
53. Support the engine with a jack or hang it on hoists. Raise the engine to remove its weight from the mounts and remove the left transmission engine mount. Lower the engine until it is stable, then raise it slightly to relieve pressure on the remaining mounts.
54. Secure the hoist to the eye at the top of the gearbox. Raise the box so as to remove its weight from the cushions, and unscrew the remaining bolts securing the box to the engine.
55. Move the gearbox away from the engine, lower it to the ground and pull it out from under the car. Make sure that the torque converter remains engaged with the oil pump during this operation. If necessary, it can be secured using a bracket attached to one of the holes for the bolt securing the gearbox to the engine. The torque converter is in proper engagement with the pump when the distance is "x" (see B/Figure 12.86) exceeds 7 mm.

56. The box is installed in reverse order. Please note the following points:
- a. Apply a small amount of grease to the crankshaft centering sleeve.
- b. Install new drive shaft seals on the final drive housing. When connecting the right drive shaft, use a seal protector (included with new seals).
- c. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque. Replace the steering knuckle ball joint nuts with new ones.
- g. Fill the gearbox with transmission fluid. Add fluid to the cooling system.
- d. Adjust the downshift cable and gear selector mechanism (see above).
