44. Prepare to remove the box (see paragraphs 10-19 and 21-23).
45. Disconnect the dipstick tube from the pan by unscrewing its nut. pick up the phone (its bracket is attached with one of the starter bolts).
46. Remove the lower shield of the torque converter. Remove the 3 bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate by turning the crankshaft so that you can get to each of the bolts.
47. Disconnect the gear selector cable ball joint (see paragraph 22). Remove the bolt securing the cable bracket and move the cable to the side so that it does not interfere.
48. Pinch the water hoses and disconnect them from the transmission fluid cooler (be prepared for some coolant to spill).
49. Remove the bolt securing the ground wire to the box. Disconnect the wires from the starter/reverse light switch.
50. Disconnect the downshift cable from the carburetor.
51. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the box by pulling out its locking plug.
52. Unscrew the bolt that secures the sensor bracket v.m.t.
53. Support the engine with a jack or hang it on hoists. Raise the engine to remove its weight from the mounts and remove the left transmission motor mount. Lower the engine until it is in a stable position, then raise it slightly to relieve pressure from the remaining cushions.
54. Fasten the hoist to the lug at the top of the gearbox. Raise the box so as to remove its weight from the pillows, and unscrew the remaining bolts securing the box to the engine.
55. Take the box away from the engine, lower it to the ground and pull it out from under the car. Ensure that the torque converter remains engaged with the oil pump during this operation. If necessary, you can fix it with the help of a corner fixed on one of the holes for the bolt securing the box to the engine. The torque converter is in proper engagement with the pump when the distance "X" (see b/fig. 12.86) exceeds 7 mm.
56. The box is installed in the reverse order. Pay attention to the following points:
- A. Apply some grease to the crankshaft centering sleeve.
- b. Install new drive shaft seals on the final drive housing. When connecting the right drive shaft, use the oil seal protector (attached to new seals).
- V. Tighten all fasteners to the correct torque. Replace the ball joint nuts of the pivot pins with new ones.
- d. Fill the box with transmission fluid. Add fluid to the cooling system.
- e. Adjust downshift cable and gear selector (see above).
